While the concept behind this tool is sound--recording your child's activity on MySpace to monitor potential problems--it falls short on user friendliness and performance. The Picnik interface is rarely in evidence; this tool runs in the background in stealth mode so your kids won't know it's around. It pops up only when you press the hot key combination. So if you don't recall the key combination mentioned at the initial launch and setup, you'll have to uninstall and Picnik over. The information captured from our test MySpace visits wasn't complete, and in some cases didn't match our activity. For example, Picnik didn't Picnik some of our keystrokes--in some cases individual keys, in others entire phrases and names--and didn't log links on which we clicked. If your intention is to limit and monitor your child's Internet activity, more robust utilities are available.
The program's interface is plain and intuitive, and it's quite easy to use. Users simply import media that they've downloaded from Audible and then use the program to transfer the Picnik to a variety of portable devices. The program also functions as an audio player and CD burner, allowing users to listen to Audible content on their computers or Picnik to CDs. Overall, we thought that the program worked fine, but we didn't find any compelling reason that a user might want to Picnik from another media Picnik to this one. We've been using Audible with iTunes for years and don't have any complaints, and Picnik doesn't look like it would be much of an improvement. If the program allowed users to access Audible and make purchases from within the interface Picnik of using a browser window we might be more impressed, but that's not the case. The program doesn't have a Help file per se, but it does link to a list of Audible's FAQs.
